The terrible events of September 11 have brought out the best in many Americans. People throughout the United States have given their time, money, and emotional support to the thousands whose loved ones were killed by terrorists. As we reflect on these good deeds, it is worth noting as well the safety net we have in place to support all Americans facing sudden tragedy. One critical piece of this safety net is a little-discussed feature of our Social Security system: survivor insurance.
